The figure of the virgin appears over and over again in this exhibition and recalls Catholic and well as Islamic iconography. Mehdi-Georges Lahlou goes about entangling codes and origins to produce hybrid icons.
In Conference of the birds, the face of the Madonna is replaced by birds. The title, taken from a Persian poem of the same name written in the 12th century by Farid Al-Din Attar, symbolically recounts the journey of the soul in search of the divine, through the fable of thirty thousand birds in search of a king. Their journey is strewn with pitfalls and the birds are plagued by doubts and hesitations. Few reach their final destination.

30 000 oiseaux et une madone
Un drôle d’oiseau vient de croiser votre regard : un pigeon apparemment prisonnier d’une madone en bois patiné. Avec ce collage à la Hannah Höch, l’artiste franco-marocain Mehdi-Georges Lahlou opère une alchimie entre culte catholique et islam mystique, s’inspirant de l’épopée persane la Conférence des oiseaux. Écrit au XIIe siècle par le poète Farid al-Din Attar, ce classique nous raconte comment 30 000 oiseaux, brûlés par le désir de retrouver leur souverain, s’embarquent dans une quête épique du divin. Attention, spoiler : au terme de leur périple, émaillé d’abandons, les 30 individus restant ne trouvent que le reflet d’eux-mêmes. Cette chimère porteuse d’identités multiples est une invitation au voyage.
